Silver City to Doc Campbell’s

I’m 200 miles into the trail!! I’m hoping to raise $1 per mile of the 3,100 miles of the Continental Divide for the Gary Sinise Foundation! The Gary Sinise Foundation helps gives specially adapted smart homes and vehicles to disabled veterans free of charge. They also perform shows overseas for deployed troops with the LT. Dan Band. They sponsor gold star kids (kids who lost a parent in combat) for a 5 day event of fun and inspiration called, Snowball Express, each year around Christmas. Last year they flew over 2,000 kids to Disney World. There is much more the Gary Sinise Foundation does, I could take up a whole post writing about it. It’s an incredible organization! If you’d like to donate here’s where you can get to it!

I left Silver City Wednesday and made it to Doc Campbell’s Post to resupply. This is the last stop before an eight to nine day walk to Pie Town. Once I get to Pie Town I will already be half way across New Mexico! While I was in Silver City I got a new pair of shoes. My boots had been rubbing my heels for the past 160 miles, so I traded them in for a pair of Brooke’s Cascadia trail runners. They are a million times better!

The landscape has changed quite a bit! I’ve walked through the Gila National Forrest going up and down the 7,000 foot mountains. My path then lead down into the canyons to the Gila River which I will follow the rest of the way. I’ve already crossed over the river at least fifty times yesterday in just a 14 mile span. The water is about knee to waist deep in most places. I just get used to having wet feet. It’s only miserable early in the morning when the temperature is in the 40s and 50s once it warms up it’s not bad!

I saw a baby rattlesnake. I even saw a black bear run up the opposite hill from me. The stars out here are incredible too there is zero light pollution, so you can see everything. I chilled in a hot spring along the river and ran into a group of day hikers. It had been about 3 days since I’ve seen anyone. They were pretty awesome and I walked the last 2 miles with them before heading up the road to Doc Campbell’s. Overall it’s been a solid 3 days. I’ll be on my way to Pie Town later today and won’t have cell phone service till I get there 8 days from now!
